Dunlavin notes week March 11th


Sympathy is extended to the family of Pat Harney , Usk who died last week. Pat who was predeceased by his wife Nina is mourned by his children Paul, Mark, Ellie and Marie, brothers and sisters and many relatives and friends. Pat’s funeral took place in Crookstown, may he rest in peace.


New Enterprises

Local shopkeeper, John O’Keeffe, has thrown a lifeline to the community of Donard/Glen. In an effort to bring about a positive outcome to the closure of Donard Post Office he has afforded   an opportunity to Kildare and West Wicklow Crafters to showcase a variety of 22 beautiful and colourful crafts. Besides being a celebration of talent, The Craft Corner, along with The Village Barber, Susan Toomey, who will wield her scissors to the delight of the male members of our community, will continue to make O’Keeffe’s Shop a meeting place for locals and the social hub of Donard

Already there is a great buzz about the place and with the coming of the holiday season it will provide a focal point for the village.


Flower Club

The March meeting will take place on March on Wednesday March 13th at 8pm in the Jonathan Swift Hall. A Spring into summer demonstration by Tracey Dennis from Hollywood Flower Studio. All are welcome.



The death took place last week of Eddie Lawlor, Merginstown. Eddie is mourned by his son martin and sister Rose Cleary and many relatives and friends. Eddie’s funeral took place  in Hollwood. May Eddie rest in peace.


Wearing of The Green

The newly formed Dunlavin Juvenile AFC are holding a fundraiser  on Sunday March 17th at 6pm in Rathsallagh Golf Club. This will feature a fine mix of Irish music, song and folklore with Phil Callery ,Dorly O Sullivan, The Milltown Singers, Ursula O Toole , Seanachai John duffy and many more musical friends. Tickets are now on sale from club members and Ed’s Fruit and Veg. €10.  Children free. Promises to be a great event. Raffle tickets are on sale for some great prizes. Tickets to the Aviva Stadium for an Ireland qualifying game and a signed Irish Jersey among the prizes. Tickets € 2 .


The death took place at the weekend of Donal lynch, Friar Hill. Donal who was predeceased by his wives Margaret and Paula , sons Daniel and Dean is mourned by Mark, Sonya, Sinead, Phillip, April, Luke and Hollie and many relatives and friends. Funeral took place in dunlavin on Tuesday March 12th 2019. May Donal rest in peace.


Registration is now open for Runlavin which takes place on Saturday June 22nd at 0am. The 5/10k event is run along the roads around the village and will

be fully marshalled . It is a fundraiser for the local GAA.



This year, 2019, is to be another West Wicklow Historical Society Journal year, and we hope to publish issue 10 sometime in the autumn DV. As you may already know, our journal also accepts articles regarding neighbouring parts of counties Kildare, Carlow and Dublin, particularly if the subject matter impinges into West Wicklow.

If you would like to contribute a paper, have students who might like to submit a suitable essay or know of anyone who would like to contribute an article, please let us know.
