Niamh Caffrey scored half of Wicklow’s 10 goals as the Garden minor lady footballers kicked off their Leinster championship campaign with a crushing defeat of Kilkenny in Ballinakill.
A superb first-half showing saw the hosts go into the break 9-11 to no score in front, with Caffrey netting four goals.
Wicklow were restricted to just the single Caffrey goal in the second-half, as Kilkenny put a bit of gloss on a thorough margin.
On a windy Friday evening in Ballinakill, Wicklow had to wait just five minutes for Niamh Caffrey’s first goal of proceedings.
That opening goal kicked off a remarkable run for the hosts, with Emer McNulty, and Siofra Byrne putting Wicklow into a 4-05 to no score lead with just 11 minutes on the clock.
Caffrey got her second and third goals on 12 and 19 minutes as Wicklow continued to dominate all over the park. A fourth Caffrey goal, this time from the penalty spot, followed by goals from Grace Hurley and a second from Emer McNulty capped off the a remarkable first-half as the referee mercifully blew the half-time whistle.
A Kilkenny goal five minutes into the second period was but mere respite for an overawed and outmatched Kilkenny side.
Niamh Caffrey’s fifth goal on 40 minutes brought Wicklow’s goal-scoring exploits to an end at 10-12 to 1-0.
However, the hosts weren’t finished scoring, as Niamh Caffrey, Kerryann Hamilton, and Emma Katus all split the posts to seal a massive 42-point win.
