Local representatives have welcomed the new 183 LocalLink bus service connecting Wicklow Town to Glendalough.
The route commenced its operations today with four daily services operating from Sunday to Thursday and six running on Friday and Saturday.
The new service aims to make Wicklow Town a key transport hub for tourists who wish to visit the popular Glendalough National Park tourist attraction, as well as experience the beautiful coastline views the county town has to offer.
Wicklow Fianna Fail TD Pat Casey was welcoming of the new service as he believes it will make one of Wicklow’s most popular tourist attractions more accessible, as well as easing the traffic congestion in the Laragh-Glendalough area.
“The new 183 bus service from Glendalough to Wicklow Town is a very welcome development and one in which I have been seeking for many years. This service will allow users of public transport such as rail users to access Wicklow’s most famous attraction.”
“In conjunction with the Laragh-Glendalough traffic plan, this should ease the congestion caused by cars which are flooding the area. For people of Wicklow Town, this service allows them to ditch the car and take an affordable and scenic method of accessing Glendalough and all the family friendly activities the iconic valley has to offer,” said Casey.
Sinn Fein local election candidate Muireann Dalton was delighted to see the introduction of the new service, stating the facility was a much-needed development for the county.
“I am absolutely delighted to see the introduction of the 183. It’s a much-needed facility and it will be a great asset to County Wicklow.”
“Sinn Fein Wicklow are very aware of all the transport issues and the immediate need to improve our transport services. Myself and John Brady have been working on transport campaigns and welcome this new link from Wicklow Town to Glendalough,” said Dalton.
Fine Gael TD and Ireland South East European election candidate Andrew Doyle believes the new service is a game-changer for Wicklow as businesses will benefit from the new connections between small communities in the county.
“I am delighted that we will now have a direct bus link from Wicklow town to Glendalough with the new 183 route. It’ll be a game-changer for the people and businesses of Wicklow, connecting smaller villages with Wicklow Town. It’s a significant step forward for Wicklow as a tourist destination.”
“Glendalough is one of Ireland’s most beautiful and historical sites and it is fantastic that there is now more access to it. Up to now, visitors travelled from Dublin to enjoy Glendalough and would then have to make their way back to Dublin. This new route will open up Wicklow to tourists and enable Wicklow Town to become the base for exploring this beautiful county,” said Doyle.
The route will serve stops in Wicklow Town (Wicklow Gaol, Grand Hotel, Train Station), Rathnew, Ashford, Roundwood, Annamoe, Laragh and Glendalough.
