Wicklow Town is about to experience a taste of contemporary art, as the first gallery of its kind is set to open its doors on Saturday, June 22nd.
The Venue Gallery was co-founded by local artists Louise Cherry and Stephaine Sloan, forming the gallery as a result of a mutual desire to form better supports and visibility for contemporary artists in County Wicklow.
The gallery aims to combine the provision of an exhibition space, along with creating a community space for anyone interested in developing their knowledge in the visual arts.
Speaking ahead of the opening, Lousie Cherry said “Wicklow Town really needs a centre like this, there is nothing locally to support contemporary local artists, and there are lots of us! We would love this space to be open year round, however, we feel the town cannot sustain this, so we came up with this idea for a permanent pop up gallery.”
The gallery’s inaugural exhibition “Catching Light” will open on Saturday, June 22 and will run for four weeks. It will feature the work of three Wicklow artists, prints by Stephaine Sloan, paintings by Louise Cherry and ceramics by Cathy Burke.
The gallery will also host talks, workshops and events, which invite further engagement with the arts, over June and July. Workshops are open to artists of all levels. Places are limited and booking is essential.
The Venue Gallery can be found at 57 Main Street, Wicklow Town and online at www.thevenuegallery.com
