New dog park needed to tackle dog fouling problem says cllr Winters

Wicklow Cllr Irene Winters is seeking the development of a purpose built dog park for the area between Wicklow Town and Rathnew.

Cllr Winters spoke about the concerns being raised on the doors:

“Through my work as a councillor, I meet people every day. I am on the doors meeting people as I canvass in Wicklow Town and Rathnew and it is really clear that the persistent dog-fouling problem is impacting on our community.  It is being raised with me at most doors and it is particularly worrying for parents of young children who end up with dog pooh on shoes, wheels of bicycles, scooters and buggies.   Many responsible dog owners also want additional measures put in place i.e. more collection bins with pooh bags restocked, but they also want a place where they can let their dog off lead

“I think the best way to resolve this is to invest in infrastructure especially for dog walkers. People would really appreciate knowing they have a place to walk their dog in which everyone is comfortable with animals.”

Cllr Winters continued:

“Our community would really benefit from the development of a specific dog walking park and play area. This would not mean a ban on walking dogs in other areas in our community but it would provide a space to concentrate the majority of off lead dog walking.

The best solution would be a change in public attitude to make picking up after dogs the norm. I am determined to work with Wicklow County Council and our dog walking communities to get a suitable park open and increase public awareness. Better facilities will make Wicklow a better place to live.
