Katie gets hero’s welcome in her hometown of Bray

Thousands of  people descended on Bray seafront this evening (Friday) to welcome home world boxing champion Katie Taylor at a special event organised by Wicklow County Council.

The huge crowd cheered and applauded as Katie Taylor, the new undisputed lightweight champion of the world, took to the stage on Bray seafront.

Master of Ceremonies at the homecoming event, RTE’s Des Cahill, lead the tributes to Katie while conducting a short interview with the boxer who also holds an Olympic Gold Medal amongst her many trophies.

The crowd was also treated to videos of Katie’s recent winning bout in New York’s famous Madison Square Garden as well as clips of her previous victories in the ring.

Bouquets of flowers were presented to Katie and her mother Bridget by the Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Irene Winters and Mr Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Wicklow County Council.

 Cllr Irene Winters, Cathaoirleach, Wicklow County Council, told the adoring fans: “It is truly an honour for Bray to welcome home Katie Taylor.   We are immensely proud of her achievements to date and look forward to celebrating many more victories for Katie in the future.”

Katie told the crowd : “The support I get in this town is incredible.   It is always great to come back here.”

In true Katie fashion she spent almost an hour signing autographs and taking selfies with her adoring supporters.
