Wicklow clubs learn 2019 Leinster championship fate

This season’s county football and hurling champions will face teams from Offaly and Dublin in the 2019 Leinster club championships, respectively.

The draw for next year’s provincial competitions was made on Tuesday, with this season’s senior county football winners set for a repeat of their first round tie from 2018.

Less than 24 hours after claiming their first senior football title since 2012 by way of a replay win over neighbours Rathnew, St. Pat’s hosted the 2018 Offaly champions, Rhode.

The close proximity between the games gave rise to backlash against the county board and its handling of the fixture scheduling, with Pat’s boss Casey O’Brien saying that the board’s response was “a load of s**t”.

O’Brien’s men came up short that day, but may get their chance at redemption, should they retain their title and qualify for an away clash against the Offaly champions later this year. The victorious club would then go on to a home quarter-final against the champions from Laois.

As for hurling, this season’s county champions will welcome the Dublin county victors to Aughrim in the intermediate championship.

Last season, Gary Laffan’s Glenealy team were knocked out of the provincial quarter-finals by Portlaoise, following a dramatic affair in Joule Park that saw Danny Staunton score one penalty, and have another saved.

A win over the Dub club would earn this year’s Garden champs a semi-final shot at the winner between the Meath and Offaly holders in the semi-final.
