Made in Wicklow: Feeling thirsty? Have a Wicklow Wolf

The old worldwide stereotype of the Irish suggests we do love a good pint every so often.

Whether that is true or not, is up to each individual.

However, what is true is the fact that the Wicklow Wolf Brewing Company selection has delighted the taste buds of craft beer lovers right across the garden county.

And, the best thing – it is 100 percent local.

But how did Wicklow Wolf come to its existence on tap in our many bars and in bottles on the supermarket shelves in Wicklow and beyond?

As happens often in the business world, the thought of two friends running a business based on a shared passion brought Quincey Fennelly and Simon Lynch together.

The two had fell in love with craft beer during their time in California and, for the duo, setting up a brewery was an inevitability. With that, the company was founded in late 2014.

So, what were they going to call their Wicklow based craft beer company?

According to the company’s story page on its site – “Wicklow, because that is where we opened our brewhouse. Wolf, because the last one ranged freely across the Wicklow countryside, and because the hops we plant on our farm takes its name ‘humulus lupulus’ from that wild and proud creature.”

Speaking of hops, Wicklow Wolf pride themselves on their very own ten acre hop farm in Roundwood.

It is here where they grow their own hops, with 12 different varieties, as they overlook the wildering Wicklow forests, mountains and lakes with an eagle eyed view of the Irish Sea.

The Wicklow Wolf Hop Farm is the first commercial hop farm in Ireland in over 20 years.

The company’s current brewery is located in Bray, but earlier this year they announced they would be locating in a brand new state of the art brewery in Newtownmountkennedy. Built on a two acre site, the new 17,000 sq feet brewery will be the home to their new 35hl brewhouse tanks, canning and bottling lines.

Now that we have the history and the current state of play out of the way, we are feeling thirsty. What have you got to drink?

Wicklow Wolf has five distinct ranges of beer: the Alpha Pack, Endangered Species, Crossbreed Series, The Locavore Project and the Extinct range.
