Congratulations to Lena Tice and the Irish Ladies Hockey team on their qualification to the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

There was drama in Donnybrook this evening after the game ended in stalemate after two hours of hockey over two nights failed to separate Ireland and Canada. Ireland were favorites going into the game but came up againt a dogged side.

After the hour the sides went to penalties with Canada up first and took the lead, Ireland missed their first penalty and it looked like Canada were on their way as they took a 3-1 lead.

Up came Beth Barr and Chloe Watkins to take the game to sudden death.

Roisin Upton stepped up to take Ireland’s first penalty in sudden death and scored from the tightest of angles to put Ireland ahead, Canada’s Amanda Woodcroft then failed to beat Ireland keeper Ayeisha McFerran and the Irish team were on their way.

Elena becomes the second person to make the plane to Japan from Wicklow after Fionnuala McCormack qualified for the Marathon last month.
