Devoted to Cakes Online Baking School, brings the art, science and fun of baking to families via its once off workshops and courses. In a time of social distancing and restrictions on hobbies and after-school activities, these interactive courses and workshops break the ‘tech wall’ allowing us to connect with ourselves and others.
Many responded to the pandemic, by reaching for the rolling pin and flour. Why we reacted in this way was a question that resonated with us. Possibly, it was out of necessity to create staples like bread, but it was possibly the therapeutic nature of the craft and a desire to return to tangible basics. Using our combined experience in education, counselling and the culinary arts, rather than design courses and workshops that focus primarily on the end product, we emphasise the skills and understanding that are developed from the process. Our workshops and courses are a chance to take the time to relax, explore and create with us through a wide variety of topics including pastries, homemade chocolates, savoury breads. We share our passion of baking, so that what they learn about themselves and the craft is adaptable and transferable, long after they have logged off.
Lorraine, Devoted to Cakes owner commented “We can zoom in on each kid and see what’s happening in their workspace and give them feedback when needed. The kids are loving the interactive nature of the workshops. They can hold up their dough to show us the texture and we can say “add more flour”. In fact the tech side has fallen into the background and the tactile nature of the baking is really the star of the show.”
“We can see the parents also getting involved and enjoying the experience. Families are baking together, learning together and creating those funny moments and then enjoying the fruits of their labour. Our daughter Sophie, aged 9, also bakes with us occasionally in the workshops.’
“Our students learn by making mistakes. We offer trouble shooting in the online sessions and encourage them to try again. The feedback from parents is that the kids are recreating their bakes again and again.’
Our next set of workshops from September to Christmas will focus on seasonal products, covering Autumn Bakes, creepy and creative Halloween recipes and everything from the traditional Christmas cake to alternative Christmas bakes.
