Wicklow man Ciarán Moran has brought together a cast and creative team of very familiar faces and voices for his latest short film – the aptly titled MAD ONE.
Telling the story of the lengths one young man will go to in order to lie about his whereabouts for six days after a music festival – and the snowballing effect this has alongside growing media attention – MAD ONE is already set to be a modern parable for the 2020s.
“I think a lot of people would be able to relate to the dreaded feeling that the main character, Jim, has when he returns home a couple of days after the festival has ended.” Said director Ciarán Moran, “I think the film pokes fun at his absolute unwillingness to admit what happened, but also the naivety of the parents who believe it.
“It’s a fun, fast-paced movie and a lot happens in the 25 minutes as I really wanted to show how quickly a lie can grow legs.”
MAD ONE features actors and creatives who will be familiar to many, including Seán Doyle (Killing Bono, Normal People), Áine Ní Laoghaire (Dublin Murders, Young Offenders), Sharon Coade (Sweetness in the Belly, Fair City), Seamus O’Rourke (Shining City, The Beauty Queen of Leenane), Aidan O’Sullivan (Follow the Dead) and the hilarious Peter Cassidy (Hardy Bucks).
The film also features original music from former Hot Sprockets front man Midnight Wayne, and Cork-based electronic artist Toby Kaar.
Ciarán said “Whenever I’m writing a script, I go on a lot of walks and listen to music to help come up with ideas. Two of the artists that I kept coming back to whilst writing MAD ONE were Midnight Wayne and Toby Kaar, so I decided to approach them to see if they’d be interested in joining the project. Thankfully they agreed, and I couldn’t imagine how the film would feel without them. The tracks they made have lifted the film tenfold.”
