Greystones couple tackling Ireland’s growing plastic problem

From film sets to ecopreneurs –quick thinking Greystones couple tackling Ireland’s growing plastic problem

Ecoset is a new reusables company based in Greystones, Co. Wicklow. This exciting new company offers eco-friendly on-the-go products perfect for drinking outdoors. A stylish selection of bottles, travel mugs, tumblers and also specialised wine tumblers, reusable wine bottles, whiskey tumblers and champagne flutes which are the new eco-essentials.

Ecoset Founder, Sarah Maunsell, says: “What makes Ecoset’s range stand out from the crowd is that we are offering not just water bottles and coffee mugs but also insulated wine sets, tumblers for enjoying your next G&T in the great outdoors with friends. Who said sustainability has to be boring?”

Founders Sarah Maunsell and Oscar Lai’s origin story is an interesting one. Oscar Lai is originally from Brooklyn NY and has a background in hospitality. Sarah owns a production company called Location Fixer Ireland – which offers international productions filming in Ireland essential production support, location scouting services and local crew for their productions. The majority of their clients are based in the US so when COVID-19 hit and the pandemic restrictions came into effect the majority of their scheduled international productions were postponed or rescheduled. This allowed Sarah and Oscar time to focus on Ecoset and get it up and running.

Sometimes in the waves of change, we find our true direction:

Sarah and Oscar decided to use this downtime to finally set up Ecoset which had been on their to-do list for years.

Sarah says: “As with most TV and Film productions the person count on set can be over the 100s including all of the cast and crew, so single use plastics especially plastic water bottles can quickly mount up. It was always something I struggled with personally on set, especially when we were filming in some of Ireland’s most remote and epic locations.”

Sarah decided to ensure that any productions that they were linked with proceeded in a more eco-friendly manner. Step one was to get rid of plastic water bottles on set. Which they did at the end of 2019. This is where the idea for Ecoset came about. When COVID hit they decided to pivot their initial concept and launch Ecoset to the masses.

Living by the sea in Greystones Sarah and Oscar also helped strengthen their resolve to create an eco-friendly brand. Spending all their spare time by the sea with their two boys (9 and 11) often meant inevitably picking up random pieces of rubbish left on the beach. Both Sarah and Oscar feel it’s important for everyone to be more eco-conscious and aware of the litter problem we have on our coastline. “It’s all about the leave no trace mentality and leading by example.”

What sets Ecoset apart is that they’ve teamed up with Clean Coasts who protect Ireland’s beaches, seas and marine life to support the incredible work they do. With every product purchased Ecoset automatically donates a percentage of each sale to the Clean Coast grant scheme which supplies and supports volunteer groups with local clean up projects all across Ireland.

Sarah says: “We have teamed with Clean Coasts to support them for all the great work they do keeping the Irish coastline litter free and our sea free of plastic. It is something we are so proud to be a part of. We are proud to promote them and create awareness. Litter on our beaches is a huge problem.”

The plastic facts:

  • Every year we produce nearly 300 million tons of plastic, half of which is for single use
  • It is now believed that there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean
  • Only one in five plastic bottles are properly recycled
  • Drinking from reusables can be safer than disposable bottles as all Ecoset product are BPA free

Ecoset launch and plans for 2021:

Ecoset launched online last November and Sarah says they’ve been blown away by the response from customers. “The timing was everything. In 2020 everyone was spending more time outdoors from gatherings in the garden, hikes, sea swimming to meet ups in the park, so our on-the-go products were perfect for this and made sense. We have even added some new exciting products for February to include reusable champagne flutes for when we can all celebrate outdoors again.”

Another key selling point is that Ecoset also offers a unique customisable personalised laser engraving service on all of their products. All the engraving is done at base in their workshop in Greystones by Oscar. Add your name, a friend’s name, a mantra, company logo or brand message to any Ecoset product. Ecoset also offers a corporate gifting and co-branding service to companies.
