Camogie
All Ireland Success for Annacurra camogie girls.
It’s never a bad day, when you win an All-Ireland!
Leaving the pitch after the semi final two weeks ago, the people of Cavan told us that they would find it hard to pick a winner between ourselves and Mayo, and with those words of warning ringing in our ears, a large contingent from Annacurra headed for Breffni Park, and the Under 16 All Ireland Camogie Final last Sunday. This was a massive day for Annacurra camogie club with four representatives on the Wicklow playing panel, and one on the coaching team.
There were family members, club members, and even relations from a place called Longford who made the long trip to Cavan Town to cheer on Juliette Ni Chonnail, Laci-Jane Shannon, Chloe Cullen, Molly Hynes and Max Molloy in their efforts to bring home an all-to rare accolade to the garden county.
On a day when everyone excelled, our girls were not to be denied, and although the 3-13 to 0-03 scoreline does not do our Mayo counterparts justice, we will take an All-Ireland title whatever way it comes. We had the added distinction of providing the Player of the Match in Laci Jane Shannon who was unmarkable at Centre Half Forward, and later midfield, contributing 5 scores from play. In the early exchanges, when everyone was trying to work each other out, Laci took the game by the scruff and pointed the way forward.
This, coupled with a backline lead by Ciara Waifer, who repelled every attack, pushed Wicklow into a commanding lead at half time, which was never surrendered throughout a second half which saw all our girls introduced to seal the deal.
A massive congratulations to Max, Rory Connolly (and his Aughrim girls, Aoife Campbell and Holly Byrne), and everyone involved in the backroom, and further afield. This was a massive achievement and should be celebrated by everyone in our club, and all around the county. Well done girls!
Parish Journal
After the year we’ve had, and indeed are still having, it is a good time to create a new parish journal. There are events that we want to commemorate and to remember.
I think the best way to think of a parish journal is to imagine someone reading it in thirty, fifty, or a hundred years. What would you like them to see and read about? We owe it to the next generations to record.
Due to GDPR and Data Protection, it will be a different journal than previous ones, but it can still be one that we can be proud of.
I would encourage any clubs, societies, and organisations in the parish/village to get involved and write a report on their events and activities.
All contributions are welcome – the more the merrier. Articles are welcome. Please get in touch if you need any clarification. Help will be given if anyone needs it for typing and editing.
I want to thank Kathleen McAllister, Marguerite Shannon, and Padraig Healy for being willing to be involved in the project.
Closing date for submissions will be August 10th and we will hopefully have it ready for the end of the year.
