Far-right group threaten to vandalise Arklow’s Pride crossing

A far-right group has posted on an online platform threatening to vandalise Arklow’s rainbow Pride crossing.

A member of the group posted on Telegram threatening to slip and spill white paint on the crossing, which was only installed in last December.

“Be a terrible shame if someone were walking across the road with a tin of white paint, slipped on the rainbow crossing and the paint spilt all over it,” said the far-right member. “A terrible shame.”

Another member had replied to this comment and called the rainbow crossing “disgusting”.

Wicklow Pride Festival branded the people who made the comments as “ignorant, sick and disturbed people” who are “filled with hate and stupidity”.

“These cowards hide behind fake social media profiles…and spout hate to those foolish to listen to them.”

The pride rainbow crossing appeared overnight last December after being installed by Arklow Municipal District and was widely received by the people of Arklow and the larger county area.

Wicklow Pride Festival added that the comments posted by a far-right group show the need to teach young people about the importance of inclusivity and the positivity of diversity.
