Man dies after being struck by falling tree near Wicklow-Wexford border

A man has died after he was struck by a tree on the Wicklow-Wexford border as Storm Eunice continues to track across Ireland.

WicklowNews.Net understands the tragedy occurred between Gorey and Tinahely at Ballythomas this morning.

The man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was working clearing trees when he was fatally injured.

Wexford County Council has confirmed the man was employed by the council and the fatality occurred as the employee attended the scene of a fallen tree in the North Wexford area.

““It is with deep regret and sadness that Wexford County Council confirms that one of our employees was fatally injured earlier today in a workplace accident,” said a spokesperson for the council.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family, work colleagues and friends at this very difficult time.”

Gardaí are investigating the tragedy and the Health and Safety Authority has launched a full investigation.

Met Éireann had placed counties Wicklow and Wexford under a status orange weather warning for wind, which expired at 11am this morning.
