Details announced for National Bike Week in Wicklow

Over 25 events are planned in Wicklow for National Bike Week 2022 which begins on Saturday, May 14th and runs until Sunday May 22nd.   The theme for this year is ‘Click into Gear’.

Wicklow Sports Partnership Coordinator, Aisling Hubbard, said: “Bike Week offers a great opportunity for the public to get out and enjoy the beautiful outdoors that Wicklow has to offer. It doesn’t matter if you are an avid cyclist or a complete beginner, we have something for everyone.”

In partnership with the National Transport Authority, Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of the benefits of cycling. Cycling, as a mode of travel, is on the increase with more people choosing to cycle for shorter journeys, making it more important to have your bike in working order.

To coincide with all of these great activities, beginner and intermediate Bike Maintenance Workshops will be taking place in Blessington, Greystones and Wicklow Town. These workshops will teach cyclists how to change tubes and tyres, tune the gears on their bike and how to make adjustments to their brakes, so they work and feel right specified to their needs. Each participant will leave the workshop with a free puncture repair kit and tyre lever.

Speaking about Bike Week, Cllr. Shay Cullen, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, said: “We are encouraging everyone to drive less and cycle more where possible. Events like Bike Week help inform and educate cyclists so they can be as safe as possible on the roads.”

There will be over 25 events happening around the county with a Social Cycle in Wicklow Town kicking off the event on Saturday, May 14th, finishing off with a delicious pastry and hot beverage in The Firehouse Café.

There will be a vast variety of activities happening across the county from Cycle to Zen to Learn to Cycle programs. There really is an event suitable for everyone.

“It’s great to see events like Social Cycles and Family Cycles happening back again as it helps members of the local communities to meet up and socialise in a fun and healthy way,” said Wicklow County Council Chief Executive, Brian Gleeson.

Spaces for each event can be booked via the Wicklow Sports Partnership Eventbrite. For a full schedule of events and links to booking check out
