Whitmore congratulates Wicklow Comhairle na nÓg on successful event in Newtown

Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore congratulated the young people involved in the Wicklow Comhairle na nÓg event held in the Parkview Hotel in Newtownmountkennedy.

The event for Student Council members across the County was held on Friday 6th May held discussions on a range of youth issues including climate change, biodiversity, drug use, hate speech as well as mental health.

Deputy Whitmore attended the event, saying: “I was delighted to meet the Student Council members of this very important event and to listen in on the hugely important issues facing young people in Wicklow today. Often times their voices are not heard and it was a great opportunity as a TD for Wicklow to get to see first-hand the great work they are doing.

“There was a huge turnout with every area of Wicklow covered by Student Council representatives. I enjoyed speaking to lots of students from schools all over the county. Many of the issues that came up for them were related to mental health and environment as well as climate change.”

She continued: “As Social Democrats Spokesperson for Climate Action, it was an great opportunity to listen to what young people in my constituency have to say on matters relating to climate change and biodiversity. It’s clear young people in Wicklow want regular opportunities to engage with their representatives particularly as this is European Year of the Youth and the ongoing current consultation as part of the EU Youth Dialogue on a sustainable and inclusive Europe.”

“I look forward to working with them in future and hearing from them as they continue to advocate on youth issues,” concludes Whitmore.
