A Wicklow man has been jailed for 11 years for repeatedly raping his foster daughter.
Stephen Murray, of Humphreystown, Valleymount, Co Wicklow was handed down the sentence after he pleaded guilty to 14 charges of rape, two charges of oral rape and one charge of sexual assault over a period of seven years.
His victim, 24-year-old Kelly Kemmy said in her victim impact statement that the abuse she suffered “feels like a life sentence” and that her “teenage years were dark”.
Waiving her right to anonymity, Ms Kemmy told journalists outside the Criminal Courts of Justice that today “marks a small step in my fight for justice”.
“I was a child let down by both Tusla and my foster parents,” Kelly continued, before thanking her family and friends for their support.
“I know first hand how difficult it is to come forward as a victim and I hope this verdict will be a ray of hope for all other victims of sexual abuse and they may come forward and have the strength to find their own justice.”
