There will be big celebrations in Rathdrum after Avonmore FC beat Arklow Town in the Wicklow Cup final on Sunday afternoon in Rathnew.
Arklow had had a number of chances in the game but could not find a way past Ger Byrne, Avonmore had a goal ruled out for offside.
When it looked as though the game was heading for extra time up stepped Fiachra O’Hannain, who drove a daisy cutter to the right hand side of Arklow keeper Mervyn Travers.
Ger Byrne was called on again as Arklow knew the clock was against and threw all they could at the Avonmore defence who stood solid to see out the game and bring home the cup.
Wicklow League President Jim McLaughlin presented Paddy “Gouch” Kennedy with the winning trophy while the Man of the Match Award went to Avonmore’s Cian O’Hannain.
Before the match the Avonmore side received a message of support from Chelsea player Kai Havertz, while after the game Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount sent his congratulations.
