Round Ireland brings buzz to Wicklow Town

Lightyear may have hit the cinemas during the week, but there was a buzz of a different kind as the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Yacht Race festival took place over the weekend in Wicklow Town.

After over two years with no activities in the town such as the Regatta and the Taste of Wicklow, the Round Ireland set a precedent for the upcoming festivals.

Large crowds gathered on Saturday afternoon as 46 boats from throughout Europe, the UK and the USA took off from Wicklow Harbour on the 704 nautical mile trip around the Irish coast.

Entertainment, food stalls and amusements took place on the Black Castle and Leitrim Place.

As the race stands Swiss boat Kuka 3 is in the lead with Irish boat Green Dragon in second place as they sail by the Sligo coast.

Next weekend sees the return of the “Taste of Wicklow” festival which starts of Friday until Sunday, the Main event on Sunday will be held at a new venue this year in the An Tairseach Organic Farm & Ecology Centre which is located at the Dominican Convent.

All information can be found on the Taste of Wicklow Website.
