Whitmore welcomes formal transfer of land to Department for Greystones Community College

Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore has welcomed news of the commencement of the next phase for the new school build for Greystones Community College, with the Department of Education formally completing the purchase of the site in Charlesland from Cairn Homes.

Deputy Whitmore says, “I welcome news that things are progressing for the school community with the move by the Department of Education to purchase lands at Charlesland. Now that we have an approved planning application already in place with Wicklow County Council, it is good news to hear the Department will now own the site outright. This will allow the Department to start the tendering process for the building of the school.

“It has been a long and difficult journey for the school and I have been in touch with the Principal, teachers, staff and parents for many years as they campaigned to move this project along. Students have been waiting a long time to work in permanent, fitted classrooms.

“However, demand for school places in the area continues to rise and so I am urging the Department to move as soon as possible with the tendering process so that building can begin quickly.

“I hope that there are no unnecessary delays as the project progresses and will be keeping in touch with the school throughout tendering to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible” concludes Whitmore.
