Wicklow retains fine form in latest IBAL litter survey

The latest survey by Irish Business Against Litter shows Wicklow town among the country’s cleanest, in 7th spot in the ranking of 40 towns and cities and deemed Cleaner than European Norms.

The study reveals PPE litter is on the decrease, but the prevalence of coffee cups on our streets warrants action such as a levy, says IBAL. 2022 marks the 20th year of the IBAL litter surveys.

The An Taisce report for Wicklow stated: “It’s a couple of years since Wicklow Town was included in IBAL survey and the overall presentation and maintenance of same appears to have improved significantly.

“All approach roads got the top litter grade and this high standard was sustained for almost all of the remaining sites. Industrial Complex ‘For Sale’ was the only one which didn’t get the top litter grade.

“There didn’t appear to be so many vacant / derelict sites along Abbey Street / Main Street, with the outdoor seating / substantial planting a very welcome addition.  Wicklow Gaol & environs were exceptionally well presented and maintained and the Glen Beach Cliff Walk is a wonderful addition to the town, and is clearly very well respected by the users of same.

Two-thirds of the 40 towns and cities surveyed were found to be clean, among them Naas, which retained its position atop the rankings, ahead of Letterkenny and Cavan.

Overall litter levels showed a decrease on last year, with a dramatic fall of 50% in the number of sites within towns deemed to be ‘litter blackspots’.
