When it comes to your finances, it’s important to get concise advice you can be confident with – and that’s what Arklow’s Gammell Financial Services.
The family business, which has been in operation for over 35 years, provides advice and support to thousands of its customers on topics such as mortgages, pensions and protection products.
Lorna Gammell said: “As the name suggests, we are financial advisors, we offer advice on all forms of financial advice, and any queries that people may have anything from mortgages straight through to pensions, investments, life cover, and that sort of thing.
“So we get a lot of queries from first time buyers, and even those who are moving. And so there’s a lot, there’s a lot of referral business, which is great.”
When it comes to the younger generation, Lorna says they’re generally financially aware.
“They’re very much into doing their research, not only whatever product it is that they’re going to purchase, but also the person that they’re going to deal with,” she said.
“I find, and I’ve learned over the years that, you know, even from a personal point of view, as you decide within the first five minutes of meeting somebody, whether you want to deal with them or not.”
For women who want to pursue a career in finance, we asked Lorna for advice and she said: “People see it as a complicated subject, I suppose.
“But it’s definitely a career choice for someone, there is a lot of variety, from the day to day point of view, you know, dealing with different customers, different age groups, different queries, and they’re coming in, but even from an educational point of view, so when you’re qualified, you do have to keep up to date, with your qualification, and you’re obviously ever watching, you know, different new regulations coming in what the government are up to. So it’s definitely, you know, very interesting.”
Lorna continued: “It’s rewarding as well, you know, when you’re dealing with people who are moving homes, and the excitement that they build up and where they want to be, and, you know, they have their ideas of how to decorate the house.”
Ms Gammell is a member of Network Ireland, which she said has been “very supportive”.
“I’ve been to a few of the meetings, there’ll be the coffee mornings, or different events that are on in the evening time, but just to even, you know, you’re meeting a new group of people that you wouldn’t normally be interacting with everybody, of course, has their own speciality.
“And I find that people who are knowledgeable and successful don’t mind sharing information with others. Because when you’re passionate about something, you want people to understand what your business is about.”
