Iconic West Wicklow pub goes up for sale

One of Wicklow’s most well known rural pubs is to go on the market.

Junior Byrne of Byrne’s in Rathdangan made the announcement on Wednesday.

Byrne’s will be well known to all in the GAA world as every club from West Wicklow who won a cup in Arklow or Aughrim would made the Rathdangan pub their first port of call before going home to their own village or town.

Junior posted on Social Media:

“It is with the heaviest of hearts we have decided to put our pub up for sale. We would like to thank all of our wonderful and loyal customers from the bottom of our hearts for their custom over the years and for putting the bread and butter on our table.

With heavy hearts we will turn the key in the door for the last time but we will remember forever all of the wonderful people we met along the way, the lifelong friendships that were made and those we sadly lost on the journey.

We have had the privilege of serving the most wonderful people over the years. We will remember the sports analysts, the debators, the musicians and all of our friends fondly. The memories we made in Junior’s will be remembered forever. We will miss you all. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.Junior, Teresa, Ciara, Sarah & James.”

The pub is now on the market with a guide price of €374,000 and is described as below

“JUNIOR’S BAR”, with 5-Bed Residence, comes to the market for immediate sale.  This landmark pub, which has been synonymous with activities in West Wicklow for generations, offers the successful purchaser a quality property in excellent condition in both Bar and Residence.

Located in a particularly scenic location close to the walking areas of Lugnaquilla and the Glen of Imaal, and with Glenmalure and the Wicklow Way nearby, the potential to generate additional business from the recreational sector and AirB&B is huge.  Armed with manicured gardens and an enclosed yard with outbuildings, this particularly attractive Licensed Premises is a rare opportunity.

The property is suited for the “living on the premises” family.  The Residential accommodation which includes 5 Bedrooms, is presented in excellent condition throughout and the entire property was significantly refurbished in 2006 to include re-roofing, new wiring and new plumbing throughout.

Junior’s Bar enjoys a strong local trade, attracting customers from the wider West Wicklow area.  Renowned for its Traditional music, customers travel from near and far for the regular Trad Sessions.  Similarly, during the GAA playing seasons, Junior’s is a stopping point for club and county supporters on the return from the matches at Aughrim.

Byrne’s Pub is reported to be the 1st building in Rathdangan Village built in the early 1800’s.   The pub has a strong link to all the activities in the local area.  The current Owners are retiring from the business, and they look forward to a new owner enjoying the strong local custom and developing the very definite potential this landmark premises offers.
