Luke McCann (UCD AC) has smashed the National 1,000m Record to 2:16.40 while competing at the Monaco Diamond League on Wednesday evening. McCann came seventh in the race ahead of his European Championship action beginning next week in Munich.
The previous record, 2:17.58, was set by Olympian David Matthews in September 1996, a full two years before McCann was born.
In February this year, McCann set the National 1,000m Indoor Record to 2:17.40 while competing in the USA.
