Wicklow truck driver jailed for attempting to smuggle drugs into the UK

A Wicklow truck driver has been jailed for attempting to smuggle illegal drugs into the UK earlier this year.

Lithuanian national Edmundas Bruzas (56) of Arklow, Co Wicklow was handed down a sentence of 12 years and six months.

The court heard how Mr Bruzas was stopped by Border Force officers at the Port of Immingham on March 25 this year having arrived from Rotterdam.

After conducting a search of the truck officers noticed there was something wrong with part of the refrigeration unit.

They then discovered 60 tape-wrapped blocks of heroin in his cab weighing 30 kilos.

Edmundas, who was supposed to be transporting strawberries, denied knowledge of the drugs on board and said he was not presented when the van was initially loaded.

He later admitted to attempting to smuggle the drugs and was sentenced.
