Blood donations needed in County Wicklow

Blood donation wicklow

As the focus for September is largely on getting back to routines as children return to school and students return to college, September can be a challenging month for blood donations. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service needs 3,000 blood donations each week to support our hospitals. Current stocks of O NEGATIVE & B NEGATIVE blood are very low again so if you are an O Negative or B Negative donor & have received a text message from the Blood Transfusion Board, they are asking that you please do attend.

Blood donation clinic taking place today, 8th September at Wicklow Educate Together National School 5-8:30pm. Please call 1800 731137 for an appointment.

If you haven’t registered yet, you can be alerted when there is a clinic in your area by registering here. You can check your eligibility for donation here. Donors who are over 70 do need to have a medical certificate from their gp to confirm suitability for donation.

Martin Casey makes his 100th donation at Tinahely donation clinic – Bloody Hero!

Congratulations to Tinahely man, Martin Casey who rounded off his 100th lifesaving blood donation at the Tinahely clinic last week. Staff Nurse Patricia Dempsey was on hand to support.

Did you know that you can also donate platelets? There are approximately 22,000 platelet transfusions needed every year in Ireland and these are supported by as little as 2,400 platelet donors across the island. Platelets are essential in order for blood to clot and are used in the treatment of cancer and leukemic patients, bone marrow transplant, premature babies, serious injury and burns victims. Due to increasing numbers of cancer diagnosis, platelets are always needed.

To find out more about what platelets are and why they are so badly needed, you can find out more on Irish Blood Transfusion Service website Donations can only be made in Dublin or Cork for platelets with the Dublin clinic operating Monday – Friday.
