5 Tips to energy saving and reduced bills this winter

With Winter fast approaching and energy costs rising, Burkes Hardware Rathnew has you covered for all your insulation needs.

We caught up with John Burke to find out what his Top Tips for saving energy this winter are.

  1. Insulate your attic

According to the Seai, Irish homes loose on average, 25% of their heat through uninsulated or poorly insulated roof cavities.  Insulating your attic will save you money all through this winter and for years to come.

  1. Invest in a chimney balloon

An estimated 14% of home heat can be lost by not having a chimney balloon in your flue when not in use.

  1. Put draught excluders on all doors and windows

Draughts can come in through any cavity to outside that is not correctly filled. Doors, Windows, around pipes, electrical cables etc. Whether it’s a draught excluder for your door expanding foam for an awkward gap, we have a large range of draught excluding solutions here at Burkes so bring us the problem and we’ll send you home with the solution.

  1. Turn your thermostat down slightly

Did you know that the recommended temperature in living areas is 20°C with hallways and corridors recommended to be kept between 15-18°C. In rooms that are rarely used, think about turning the heat off completely or setting your radiators to 1 if you are concerned about damp.

  1. Switch to LED light bulbs

LED lightbulbs have come on a long way in the last few years and LED bulbs are now available for almost any variation of fitting and wattage. Check on any remaining fittings around the home to ensure you have switched over.
