Arklows Pride crossing repaired in time for town reopening

As Arklow prepares to reopen following what felt like never ending road works throughout the town, we have seen many parts of town getting some much needed tlc.

It had taken local man Dave Thomas 5 years of campaigning when the crossing was initially installed back on 21st December 2021. The first Pride crossing to be installed in County Wicklow and not without its own controversy. Almost a year since it was originally installed, it has been given a revamp with a different type of paint and a different method of sealing to keep it looking sharp for years to come.

Said Dave Thomas, local filmmaker and founder of Wicklow Pride Festival upon it’s original installation: “It is a very important public statement from Arklow on acceptance of the diversity of the town, publicly supporting the LGBTQ+ community and it clearly tells young people questioning their sexuality that no matter who you are or what your sexuality may be, you are accepted for who you are in your own hometown. It acts as a beacon of hope, inspiration, and support. It also is a very public way to celebrate the diversity in the town and to show the world how progressive Arklow can be.”

The retailers of the main street along with the shoppers no doubt will be delighted to finally see the town reopened with improved public spaces, parking and traffic flow in time for Christmas.
