Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore has called the Minister for Rural and Community Development to immediately release funds from the Small-Scale Capital Works programme in order to bring public toilets at Bray Library up to standard without delay.
Deputy Whitmore says “more and more people are engaging with their public libraries and that has to be welcomed and encouraged which means they need access to acceptable public facilities as a result.’
“I have been contacted by constituents who use the library in Bray, some of whom bring their young children there, some of whom are students looking for an environment in which they can study and prepare for exams and some of whom are disabled and need the facilities to be accessible and safe.’ “The toilet facilities at Bray library on Florence / Eglington Road are unsuited and are not appropriately situated for anyone, including staff, public users and especially those with additional needs. Critically, there is no baby / toddler changing facility. Consequently, library staff are very reluctant to allow library users access the existing bathroom.
‘I have been informed that the Library Services have a limited fund for repairs and renovations from its annual revenue budget, a fund from which repairs such as roof repairs are more often carried out. Because of this, I have asked the Minister for Rural and Community Development if he will immediately release funds from the Small-Scale Capital Works programme in order to bring public toilets up to standard.”
“I will continue to liaise with The Library Services and the Minister for rural and community Development until the public services are brought up to standard without delay,’ concludes Whitmore.
