Five Wicklow men are rowing the Atlantic Ocean since December 12th 2022 have less than 500 miles to go to reach Antigua .
Derek McMullen, Diarmuid O’ Briain and Gearoid O’ Briain from Rathdrum. Tom Nolan, Tinahely and Arklow man Shane Culleton are participating in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, rowing day and night from LaGomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean, 3000 miles away.
The fastest time in which any ‘five-person boat’ has ever travelled across the Atlantic is 35 days and 20 hours. As they commence what they hope will be their final week of rowing, the main ambition of the Wicklow men is to break that World Record for a five-person boat. Despite significant challenges, they have managed to remain in sixth place of forty-three boats participating for most of the race. They hope to remain there or even improve on that.
The Row Hard or Go Home 5 Brugha boat can be tracked at the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2022 website or YB Races App. Arrivals in Antigua can be seen live on You -Tube.
The men hope to cross the Finish Line in Antigua on January 14th or 15th 2023.
