Wicklow Country House adds to their trophy cabinet

Wicklows Rathsallagh House, in beautiful Dunlavin has come up trumps winning a Georgina Campbell, Small Stays Award 2022.

The country house is believed to have been built around 1750 as Queen Anne stables before being later converted to a house in 1798. In 1984, Rathsallagh opened as a Bed & Breakfast to supplement their farming income and the venue has gone from strength to strength and generation to generation ever since.

With log and turf fires in the bar and drawing rooms, luxurious furnishings and gorgeous gardens to explore, it’s a endearing slice of escapism in the Irish countryside. The food at the historic property epitomises the very best of country house cooking with their breakfast winning a National Breakfast Awards four times.

Described in the Georgina Campbell Guide as ‘A favourite destination that has delighted guests to West Wicklow for many a year, the O’Flynn family’s large, rambling country house on the Wicklow-Kildare border is still ‘just a lovely, relaxing place to visit’. Although only an hour from Dublin, it could be in a different world.

Speaking to Joe O’Flynn, owner of Rathsallagh House on the recent win, ‘We are over the moon to win this award. We have many 2nd and 3rd generation staff members here so every win we have really does feel like a family achievement! It definitely gives us the edge and you can see it in the reviews. Catherine Keogh has been with us here at Rathsallagh for 32 years and we recently celebrated a retirement of a team member after 40 years service!

Rathsallagh House are also members of the prestigious ‘Ireland’s Blue Book’ and Historic Hotels of Europe. They have won many coveted awards including ‘Best Historic Hotel Wedding Experience’ at the 2017 Historic Hotels of Europe Awards, an award which is contested by 500 other leading Historical Hotels and venues across Europe.

Under the ownership of the O’Flynn family for over 3 decades now, the continuity of ownership and that of having loyal team members along with them for much of the ride shows through in the many reviews from guests. It’s a quality you cannot buy nor one that you can teach.

The team at Rathsallagh House are currently gearing up for their staff event this Sunday at Naas racecourse where all team members will have a chance to let loose after the exhilaration of another festive season. After that, the full team enjoys a month off to catch up with friends and family, enjoy holidays, relax and revive before a return to the world of hospitality refreshed and ready for another season. How thoroughly civilised!

During this time, everyone will be waiting with baited breath to find out if they have won even more awards as they are finalists in 4 categories of the weddingsuppliers.ie awards – Country House venue of the year, Private & Exclusive Venue of the year Leinster, Hotel venue of the year, Venue coordinator of the year Leinster. There are currently 4 further nominations for them in the Weddings online Awards – Country House Venue of the Year, Exclusive Venue of the Year, Hotel Venue of the Year Leinster, Venue Co-Ordinator of the Year

It’s no wonder the team at Rathsallagh have also just added a ‘Great places to work award’ to add to their ever growing collection of accolades.
