Young Boxing Champ Tadgh O’Donnell last night secured his place in Irish sporting history by becoming Young Sports Star of the Year 2022.

Having boxed his way to a gold medal at the European junior boxing championships in October, Tadgh became a household name when his heroes welcome back to school at Temple Carraig, Greystones went viral.

Tadgh begins 2023 not only as a European Junior Champion but also with the honour of being Squad Captain for the Leinster Development Boxing team 2023. His move to contact Local TD Jennifer Whitmore last year in relation to securing additional support for boxers in Greystones and the wider Wicklow area indicates that he will be a great advocate for the sport as he continues his boxing career.

Tadgh shares the award with Dundalk athlete Israel Olatunde. The 20 year who is now Ireland’s fastest man produced an Irish record when he sprinted 100 metres in 10.17 seconds at the European Championship last year.

Ireland has a huge amount of up and coming young sports stars and the winning duo had a tough panel of nominees in the ring with them for this award.

Rhasidat Adeleke (athletics), James Culhane (rugby), Emma Duggan (football), Jessie Stapleton (soccer), Dylan Browne McMonagle (racing) were all nominated for the Young Sports Star of the Year 2022.

The glamourous event which was held at the Croke Park Hotel in Dublin also saw ex Irish International footballer Paul McGrath inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ireland International Women’s Soccer Manager Vera Pauw winning Manager of the Year and Marksman David Clifford named Sportstar of the Year 2022.
