Hen lays Egg-ceptional sized egg

16-year-old Craig Evans is a small free range egg producer living outside Aughrim and the proud owner of 25 laying hens and a further 6 on the point of laying.

Last week the young entrepreneur got a big surprise when one of his hens laid an extremely large egg.

Craig said “I was super egg cited and decided to do some research but was unable to discover an egg as large reported in Ireland, with the closest measuring at two to three centimetres less in length.

The egg weighs 117 grams, is 9cm in length, 5cm wide and has a circumference of 16cm.

I sell my eggs out of two honesty boxes, one at my home place and another at our family farm located a further 2km down the road.”
