Rathdrum Historical Society – Talk on Capt. Robert Halpin

Rathdrum Historical Society is hosting a talk on Robert Charles Halpin on 8 May 2023 at 8:00 p.m. in the Ann Devlin Annex of the RDA Hall in Rathdrum. The talk will be given by Jim Rees, a well-known historian.

Robert Halpin was born at the Bridge Tavern in Wicklow Town in 1836 and died at Tinakilly House in Rathnew in 1894. He went to sea aged 11 and became a Master Mariner at 22. In his career, he captained the SS Great Eastern and also laid marine telegraph cables linking four continents.

Go Games 2023

Last Friday evening Avondale had their first go games of the 2023 season which was hosted by Arklow Rocks Parnell Gaa Club. 

Avondale and Aughrim were the visiting teams to the host team Lots of fun was had by all the kids and loads of skills were shown by the kids

Congratulations to former Avondale gaa player Connor Mc Graynor and his beautiful bride Lisa Tully who were married Friday 21st April  2023 in Mayo. Best wishes to you both for the future.

Well done to  Zach Cullen and Cathal Baker form Avondale gaa club who were on the senior county football panel for Sunday’s match in Netwatch Cullen park Carlow  to play Kildare in the second round of the football championship.  It wasn’t to be Wicklow’s day as they came out on the losing side against Kildare on  a scoreline of Wicklow 0-10 Kildare 1-17

Avondale Camogie 

Congratulations 

Congratulations and well done to the Avondale players who represented their county of Wicklow on the U14 intercounty team at the weekend in their first outing of the year. The girls played Meath and Kildare and Westmeath Best of luck girls for the season ahead. 

Also well done to Avondale player  Kayleigh Fox and the minor county camogie team who have qualified for the semi finals of their All Ireland Championship in their first season at this level following their win against Mayo Well done and best of Luck in the final.

Due to the dreadful weather lately Avondale camogie club  have decided to cancel hurl with me and we hope to rearrange dates during the month of May.

Trip to Johnstown Castle Co Wexford – An ecumenical outing is being organised between members of the church of Ireland faith and members of the catholic faith Rathdrum. The outing is to Johnstown castle in Co Wexford  where we will visit the gardens, the lakes and the agricultural museum

Prior to our arrival at the castle we will stop off at the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy Co Wexford for tea/coffee and scones and on our return we will have dinner in the Amber Springs hotel in Gorey, Co. Wexford
