Arrest made after nine-year old killed in ‘hit and run’ on Saturday night

Bundoran in Co Donegal has been left numb after the death of Ronan Wilson (9), who was staying there this weekend with his family, who are from Co. Tyrone.

The boy was killed instantly when he was struck by a vehicle at about 9.20pm on Saturday night.

A man in his 20s is being detained and questioned at a Garda Station in Donegal under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. A vehicle has also been seized and is undergoing examination.

The child’s death was one of three road deaths in Ireland over the weekend, with two young men dying in Dublin and Kerry also.

The Wilson family, who are from Kildress, Co. Tyrne, are deeply rooted in their community as well as the local GAA club, and Ronan was often seen at GAA matches either supporting in the stands or playing for his U10s team.

A local Sinn Féin cllr has said that the community have been left “numb” following the child’s death.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information or who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
