Early Medieval Burial in Ireland – Excavation at Moneycarroll
On Thursday 25 March 2021, three burials were discovered at Moneycarroll,
Newtownmountkennedy, while construction work was underway for a housing
development. These discoveries are of immense importance both locally and
regionally, offering valuable insights into burial rituals and beliefs during the early
medieval period, a time of significant social change in Ireland.

Yvonne Whitty, based in Tinahely, is a licensed archaeologist since 2005. She was
involved in the Preban Graveyard Archaeological Projects in the 2010s. Most
recently she was appointed Wicklow Community Archaeologist, in an initiative to
provide professional archaeological services to groups throughout the county.

Mid-November (Blessington)
The Launch of the 12th Journal of the West Wicklow Historical Society will take place
in mid-November. Date and venue to be finalised. The launch will feature a visual
presentation by Aidan Cruise, WWHS member, on the Blessington Tram. Admission
is free.
Folk Group
When we sing hymns we pray twice! – The folk group are looking for new members.
We sing at 12 mass on the first Sunday of the month and 10am mass on the third Sunday of the month, with a short practice before and after mass. All are welcome. We will be starting back after summer at 12 mass on 3rd Sept. Call Suzanne on 087 2977794 or speak to any member of the folk group after mass.

Village Market
Great day at the first village market on the Church grounds, Over 14 stall holders took part selling a variety of crafts including plants, home-baking, art & craft items etc. It was great to have the amazing weather and so many people out to support the event. West Wicklow Historical Society
CALL FOR PAPERS
We hope to publish volume 12 of the ‘Journal of the West Wicklow Historical Society’
sometime in the autumn this year, 2023. As you may already know, in addition to
Wicklow material, our journal also accepts articles regarding neighbouring parts of
counties Kildare, Carlow and Dublin, particularly if the subject matter impinges into
West Wicklow.
If you would like to contribute a paper, have students who might like to submit a
suitable essay or know of anyone who would like to contribute an article, please let
us know. The deadline for submissions will be the end of July. If you would like to
contribute this year, please email your piece or any queries you may have to
lawlorcm@hotmail.com.
