The latest musical project from musician Michael Newell has well and truly justified the online buzz surrouding the release of his first music video, “Back on the Bus”.
Influenced by groove-heavy “rock-you-can-dance-to” titans such as Queens of the Stone Age, Clutch, and LCD Soundsystem, Wicklow’s Gypsy Moth Control have arrived with a single and music video loaded with irrefutable grooves and a psychedelic undercurrent (overcurrent?) that has become synonymous with artists from Wicklow Town.
But there’s much more to Gypsy Moth Control than that.
Describing the project himself, Michael Newell called it “a riff-focused blend of drums, guitars, and synths, with introspective lyrics delve into self-reflection, philosophy, and the triumphs over life’s struggles.”
The video for ‘Back on the Bus’ features the artist himself dancing in a room that seems to come alive as the music unravels, complete with dancing devils, lazer-guns, and a slightly ominous and ever-present pair of floating lips.
Directed by Kelly Bolger and edited by John Dillon Breen, both of whom are well-known in the local music scene as well as further afield, ‘Back on the Bus’ is an introduction that most artists would sell their souls for.
And if this first offering hasn’t whet your appetite yet, Gypsy Moth Control’s next single and music video for ‘In My Fold’ should be coming out by the end of the month.
