John McKiernan’s perfectly timed photograph has taken the big award at Greystones’ Annual Photography Competition.
With over 100 entires for this year, the Greystones Annual Photography Competition 2023 saw some tough competitors for the top prize with submissions that all captured the characteristics of the vibrant, seaside town.
However, it was John McKiernan’s well-timed photo by Greystones Cove that won the judges’ vote and earned him the overall victory.
Titled, “I Believe I Can Fly”, Mr. McKiernan’s comic but captivating image captures a man mid-flight as he dives into the sea below.
“I was just lucky, really,” says McKiernan. “With a photograph like this, it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. But I did see it in my mind’s eye, especially with this particular diver’s technique.
“I just had to wait for my moment…”
Sponsored by McGovern Estates, the annual Greystones Rocks photography competition has been running since 2017, garnering close to 1,000 entries over that time.
“There were more masterful photographs than mine this year too,” says McKiernan, “but I guess my shot just hit a certain mark…”
Runners up and joint winners of the public vote went to ‘Harbour Feeling’ by Jon Pierce and ‘Delgany Dawn’ by Peter Quinn.
