Agreement reached to ensure that The Breaches is cleared on a daily basis

It has confirmed that the Breaches, a stretch of coastland running from Newcastle to Kilcoole, is now going to be regularly monitored and cleared to avoid flooding.

Minister Simon Harris has welcomed the news, saying: “I’m relieved that there’s finally some progress regarding the Breaches coastline. Speaking to residents from Newcastle I am very aware of the risk of flooding to people’s homes and villages.”

“For too long there have been incidents where last minute emergency measures have been put in place to avoid damage to the people’s homes in both Kilcoole and Newcastle.”

“News of the Breaches being cleared on a daily basis from now on is of crucial importance as many have seen how easy flooding can occur when the tide comes in with strong gusts of easterly winds.”

“This will no doubt come as a relief to residents from Kilcoole and Newcastle who are acutely aware of the risk of flooding.”

“This is an issue I have long been aware of and have been monitoring ever since. In 2021, I visited the site alongside my colleague Minister for the OPW Patrick O’Donovan where several temporary measures were put into operation to avoid flooding.”

Minister Harris concluded “The Breaches being regularly cleared will no doubt make a significant impact however I intend on keeping track of this issue so that all long-term solutions are on the table for any future risks of flooding.”
