Whitmore calls on Council to secure future of Ashford Park and Playground

Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore has written to Wicklow County Council Chief Executive Emer O’Gorman asking for the Council to examine the possibility of acquiring the current Ashford Park and Playground site by means of a Compulsory Purchase Order.

Deputy Whitmore made this request in light of the news that following an extensive search of the local area Wicklow County Council has been unable to identify a suitable alternative site for the playground and park in Ashford. Talks between Wicklow County Council and the owners of the land on which the community park and playground are located failed to resolve the issue and Ashford Park and Playground have remained closed since October 2022.

“The community in Ashford have been locked out of their local playground and park for over a year now,” commented Ms Whitmore.

“The sudden loss of such an important and well-loved community amenity has had a negative impact on the town and is effecting local businesses as well as community morale.”

“Ashford Park was much more than a place for children to go to play, it was a focal point for the community here, a place where people could go and enjoy nature and reflect. I visited the park many times with my family and while my children enjoyed the playground, I was always struck by the park’s natural beauty,” added Ms Whitmore.

Social Democrats Local Area Representative for the Wicklow Town Municipal District, Danny Alvey also commented on the park’s importance to the community. “The Ashford playpark is one of the nicest in the area and I would often visit with my three-year old daughter. We were very disappointed when it was closed last year, and I can understand the frustration among Ashford residents who put so much work into creating this playground and community space. The community in Ashford deserve their playground back.”

Deputy Whitmore concluded, “Parks and Playgrounds are fundamentally important to the wellbeing of our communities and towns. I have written to Wicklow County Council and asked them to explore the possibility of acquiring the Ashford Park and Playground site by way of a Compulsory Purchase Order. Wicklow County Council have been working hard to resolve this situation but with no suitable alternative site available and the community already waiting for over a year without access to this much-needed facility it is time that action is taken, and the future of this park is secured for the people of Ashford.”
