Live hand grenade discovered on Arklow beach

A grenade, described as a ‘historical munition’ was discovered on Ennereilly Beach in Arklow at around 2.30pm on Saturday.

The discovery prompted immediate action from both Gardaí and The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team, who carried out a controlled explosion at the site.

A cordon was set up around the munition for the controlled explosion and the contents of the explosion were removed from the scene before the area was deemed safe once again.

Gardaí were alerted to the suspicious device at 2.30pm on Saturday, January 6th, and after a few hours spent identifying the device, securing the area, carrying out the controlled explosion, and lifting the cordon – the operation stood down by 7.35pm.
