Residents concerned with anti-social behaviour and poor condition of Baltinglass Playground

Social Democrats spokesperson for Children and Wicklow TD, Jennifer Whitmore recently visited the playground in Baltinglass Town Park with Social Democrats Local Area Rep for West Wicklow, Deirdre McCormack following concerns raised by local residents about the condition of the equipment and anti-social behaviour.

“Playgrounds are essential community amenities and an important part of a town’s infrastructure. I was disappointed to see the condition of the Baltinglass Playground when we visited. Most of the equipment is broken, the swings are not useable and there isn’t even a path to it, so it is not accessible for anyone in a wheelchair or with a buggy,” commented Ms Whitmore.

“I am delighted that funding has been earmarked by Wicklow County Council to pay for the long-awaited extension of the Riverside Walk around the Baltinglass Town Park, the construction of a plaza area and a much-needed new playground for the town. In March 2023 the Baltinglass Municipal District received €425,000 from Wicklow County Council’s Community Recognition Fund allocation. This funding, along with an additional €200,000 from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund is being used to develop and improve these important community amenities.”

“On our recent visit to the Town Park I saw that some work is being carried out on the river walk but work on the playground has yet to begin. Residents are raising this issue with our Local Area Rep, Deirdre McCormack, and are eager to hear when work will be carried out on the playground, what their new playground will look like and will the community be able to have any input into the design,” added Deputy Whitmore.

Social Democrats Local Election Candidate, Deirdre McCormack commented, “the lack of progress in relation to the playground is coming up again and again on the doors in Baltinglass. Families are worried that the playground will be forgotten about, and they are getting frustrated that there hasn’t been any information or update regarding a design or timeline for the work.”

Deputy Whitmore concluded, “I have written to Wicklow County Council asking them for an update and a timeline for the design and installation of the new playground in Baltinglass Town Park. I will continue to raise this issue for the Baltinglass community and look forward to visiting the new playground when it is completed.”
