Wicklow County Council publish Climate Action Plan

Wicklow County Council has published its first ever Climate Action Plan which provides a roadmap for taking decisive action to transition to a lower carbon and more climate resilient future for the citizens of County Wicklow.

The Plan features an ambitious 135 Actions which include a major focus on community engagement to combine all our efforts in reducing the effects of Climate Change.

It contains 112 Actions for the County and 23 Actions for the Arklow Decarbonisation Zone. Arklow has been designated as a pilot decarbonisation zone where the Council will test mitigation, adaptation, and biodiversity measures and replicate on a wider scale.

Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Aoife Flynn Kennedy,welcomed the publication of the Climate Action Plan saying: “The plan highlights how communities can benefit from the low carbon transition. This means warmer, more efficient homes; better travel options, more liveable towns, more sustainable consumer choices and a better environment for future generations.”

Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, Emer O’Gorman, commented: “Our overarching goal is to transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral county. Having this plan in place with a targeted and monitored approach to delivering actions across all services of the local authority will help us to meet our targets of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030 and improve our energy efficiency by 50% by 2030″.

Cllr Lourda Scott, Cathaoirleach of the Climate & Biodiversity Action Strategic Policy Committee, added: “We are delighted to launch a Climate Action Plan for Wicklow. The hard work and dedication of all involved is to be commended. This collaborative plan creates a pathway to reach our climate targets and respond to the challenges that climate change poses to us all.”

Breege Kilkenny, Director of Services, Wicklow County Council said: “The Climate Action Plan demonstrates Wicklow County Councils commitment to delivering on reducing the impacts of Climate Change. Our plan is a result of extensive engagement, both internal and externally, with various stakeholders, that has delivered a Plan which incorporates robust structures and processes for ongoing monitoring and reporting. The actions within the plan are accompanied by defined indicators to gauge progress accurately.”
