Blessington sports clubs call for development of new multi-purpose facility

Blessington AFC, Blessington Rugby FC, The Lakeshore Striders running club, and the Community Pool for West Wicklow are calling for a new multi-use sports facility to be included in the Blessington Local Area Plan.

Sports clubs and community groups in Blessington are calling for a new multi-purpose sports facility to be developed on an agreed-upon location under the Local Area Plan.

Deirdre McCormack, the chairperson for Community Pool for West Wicklow, highlighted the importance of such facilities in the local area: “Our community here in Blessington is growing and more and more people, especially children and young people, are getting involved with our local sports clubs. This is something that we as a community should be embracing and encouraging but our clubs are under pressure because of the lack of local facilities.

When we brought the Swim Ireland Pop-Up Pool to Blessington in 2022 we had 600 children a week learning how to swim but since it left many of these children don’t have access to a swimming pool anymore and their participation in sport has stopped.

It is imperative that the development of a multi-use sports complex with a swimming pool, football and rugby pitches and a running track is included in the upcoming Blessington Local Area Plan so that everyone in our community can access and participate in sports locally.”

The Blessington Local Area Plan is currently in a pre-draft submission period, with a deadline of April 3rd 2024.

You can send a submission here or physically to the Wicklow County Council Planning Department.
