North Wicklow Against Genocide calls on council to adopt comprehensive council motion supporting the Palestinian people

North Wicklow Against Genocide (NWAG) are calling on Wicklow County Council to pass a set of motions to actively support the Palestinian people.

NWAG, an organisation who have been prolific in their condemnation of the ongoing genocide in Gaza, have called on the council to reflect the outrage of the vast majority of their electorate by passing a set of motions in support of the people of Palestine.

NWAG have cited the ongoing genocide, displacement, and torture of Palestinians in their call for support, and have asked members of Wicklow County Council to pass the following motion declaring that:

·       Wicklow County Council calls for an end to the ongoing genocidal actions, war crimes and apartheid currently occurring in Palestine and demands an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza as a first step towards achieving this.

·       WCC declares the county an Apartheid free support zone in solidarity with the people of Palestine. And will fly the Palestinian flag over council buildings to reflect this solidarity.

·       WCC actively supports the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement that targets businesses profiting from the oppression of the Palestinian people – and  will exclude such businesses from council procurement of goods and services.

NWAG Spokesperson Kellie Mc Connell said “North Wicklow Against Genocide will attend Wicklow County Council on Monday 8th April 2024 at 1:30pm to ask Wicklow Councillors to take this important step for the people in Palestine. All like minded people are very welcome to join us. We need action now. A strong motion would simply reflect the tremendous solidarity with Palestinians that the group encounters among Wicklow people.

Such a motion is the least we can do for the besieged civilians in Gaza facing unimaginable suffering on a daily basis.”
