Pádraig (Pat) Coughlan Greystones

Coughlan Pádraig (Pat), Greystones, Co. Wicklow, following a hospital admission, died peacefully at home and in his own bed just as he had wanted April 1st 2020.

A Joey’s boy from Clontarf, Pádraig spent his youth immersed in music and Gaelic, along with a fair bit of mischief on the side. On the other side of the world, he fell in love with his wife, Wendy, and they spent over fifty years together before her death in 2017. In the glory days, he was man who loved the craic, singing in the GODS or having a pint (or two …) with his friends up in the Horse and Hound or down in the Golf Club. He dedicated his working life to medical physics in the field of oncology and was well liked and inspirational to many within that community.

He was a skilled piano player and writer. To hear him play or to receive a letter from him was always a gift. To his friends and family, he was a man who always had their back. He was stubborn, gregarious, warm, gentle, wise and proud. But, most of all, he was a loving and loved husband, father and grandfather (Pop) who expressed that love in his own quiet way. His family, his wife, his children and his grandchildren filled him with happiness and pride and being with them always brought a smile to his face and joy to his heart. Pádraig’s final years were not easy but he lived them with the family motto in mind, Fortis in Arduis – Strength in Adversity. For all those who were part of his life over the years we hope you can raise a parting glass to his memory.

To those who supported him while he was unwell including the Harbour Family Practice, McCauley’s pharmacy, Dr. Emmet McGrath, Home Instead and most recently the team at the Beacon who made it possible for Pádraig to return home, a heartfelt thanks.

Thanks too to Mark Kinsella Funeral Director for all his support and guidance.

Pádraig is survived by his children, Seán, Siobhán, Jennie and Helen, their spouses Michelle, Andy and Michael, his sister Máire, and by his grandchildren Ana, Thea, Amelie, Tadhg, Lola and Noah.

Due to the recent HSE guidelines regarding public gatherings, Pádraig will be laid to rest at Redford Cemetery privately on Sunday, April 5th. Pádraig’s immediate family will walk from his house to the cemetery leaving the house at 12.30pm.

Anyone who would like to line the road from the house to the cemetery is welcome to do so in accordance with social distancing and other restrictions. Pádraig’s children will arrange a gathering to raise a glass to him at a later date.
